ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE - ISSUE 31 (01.12.03)
LIFE HAS IT'S FUNNY LITTLE UP'S AND DOWN'S
Well it certainly does and that's been proved once again this week. I hope you've been wondering why Accentuate the Positive was missing from your mailbox yesterday. My delightful 'webbie' guys made some very advantageous changes to the software. Strangely however, caught up as only computer boffins can be in this masterful new stroke, they neglected to inform ME. I'm less of a technophobe than I used to be but blips of this nature still have me questionning my own ability. I have however learned now to laugh it off, at least some of the time.
Today, I'm not talking about life's ' tough calls' and we can all think of many examples. I'm talking about the ordinary, average, everday things that come up and present a challenge. Frequently, if we can see the funny side of whatever's going on we get through the experience so much more easily.
One day last week for instance - in the space of just 3 hours. Two of three cars decided not to start on a day when we were responsible for taking and fetching grandchildren to and from school and nursery. One of the kittens came in and was monumentally sick all over my office carpet (why do cats eat grass?) One of the curtain poles came unhitched and my gorgeous new curtains cascaded in a heap to the floor. My husband bashed his head very hard on the boot lid of the car and came in dripping blood. To cap it all I then locked myself out of the house at a time when both my (keyholder) neighbours were out of earshot. It was now 11.15 am on a wet and windy day which had started before 7.00 and I'd achieved very little, very little indeed. I sat on the front garden wall and started to laugh helplessly because, suddenly, it was all so ridiculous. I was enthusiastically greeted by another neighbour's very wet Collie dog and so, just to add another dimension to this otherwise eventful morning; my trousers now need dry cleaning!
We are approaching Christmas. In this house it's already begun with the delivery of the Advent Calendars last evening. Little did I know that when I filled 24 little pockets with tiny gifts for my first grand-daughter Lilybea, I'd be doing the same thing x 5 six years on. Christmas can be very stressful and my message to all parents is 'keep a firm hold on your sense of humour'. Accept, particularly if you are professional working parents, that you can't 'do it all' and that there will be many 'Funny little up and downs' in the next few weeks. Do what you can and remember to include some 'laughter therapy'. You'll feel all the
better for it.
Any tips for avoiding stress at Christmas gratefully received and posted to my website.
